RP - Reduced Pressure (Principle) Assembly
MAGIC RAIN tends to steer clear of the RPA (unless absolute CODE for a particular city or township). The RPA DOES exactly as it says. A RP backflow device stands for "Reduced Pressure" Assembly.
You are actually reducing the volume (pressure) of water your sprinkler system would normally have provided. When utilizing an RPA, you need to coincide with a very low gpm type of head in order to avoid DONUTS (instead of a higher GPM of which would provide head-to-head coverage).
Description of a Reduced Backflow Assembly
The Reduced Pressure Principle Assembly consists of two (2) internally loaded independently operating check valves and a mechanically independent, hyrdaulically dependent relief valve located between the check valves. This relief valve is designed maintain a zone of pressure between the two (2) check valves at all times. The RP also contains tighly closing, resilient seated shut-off valves upstream and downstream of the check valves along with resilient seated test cocks. This assembly is used for the protection of the potable water supply from pollutants or contaminants and may be used to protect against either backsiphonage or backpressure.
If MAGIC RAIN were, required by CODE, to utilize an RP backflow device, we would definitly want to incorporate the usage of the Rain Bird 5000 Series Rotor!
The 5000 Rotors will work as low as 40 gpm (gallons per minute) providing an even, and equal amount of water distribution despite the lack of reduced water pressure.
