PROVIDENCE HOUSE Providence House, Ohio's first licensed crisis nursery, offers emergency shelter to children newborn through five years old actively living in crisis. Since 1981, Providence House has provided quality, center-based, family focused residential care to over 5,000 infants and children in crisis.
Their services are focused on protecting at risk children, preventing child abuse and neglect and preserving fragile families. Nearly 200 children are served through their programs each year. Children are referred to Providence House by more than 25 community agencies, including area hospitals, drug treatment centers and women's shelters. Their programs and services are designed to offer families a voluntary alternative to safely remove their child from crisis and provide a safe, loving haven with quality early childcare services while offering support to the family through innovative programming, focused on Family Preservation.
Why do children arrive at theProvidence House?
- 44% of families are homeless
- 58% of children are at risk for abuse/neglect
- One in 8 has a caregiver with a medical crisis
- One in 10 has a caregiver affected by a mental health issue
- One in 10 has a caregiver attempting to resolve substance abuse
- One in 8 is a witness to domestic violence
In 2007 alone:

- 1,482 visits between families & children were supported
- 416 parent education sessions were held
- More than 200 medical visits were provided
- Over 17,700 meals & 11,800 snacks served
- Nearly 40,000 diapers were changed
- More than 1,000 outfits were given to children along with shoes, blankets, toys and books
- A Day of Care at Providence House costs $340 per child
- The average cost for the placement of a child at Providence House is $9,520. If that child were placed in foster care, it would typically cost taxpayers more than $60,000.
- Providence House services protect children, preserve families and save taxpayers and the county more that $10 million each year.
At Providence House, just as they rely on contributions from private donors, they also are dependent upon the volunteers! In addition to their paid staff members, volunteers help keep the adult to child ratio very low, giving each child the individual love and attention that they so desperately need & deserve.
We invite you to help the babies and children of Providence House . . . with the gift of your time, talent & energy!
It is your time that allows Providence House to offer the best nurturing and most loving environment possible to infants, toddlers and preschoolers living in crisis.
